August 17, 2010
  • Amy Davidson with a brilliant piece about the disputed plans for an Islamic community centre near the ‘hallowed ground’ of Ground Zero in NYC
  • Jenny resigns from her job, in photos.  The story isn’t real but I still love it for showing the reality of sexism in a way that thousands of people could easily see when this went viral.
  • Kamila Shamsie writes about Pakistan’s floods.  If you haven’t donated then please donate whatever you can to DEC here.
  • Stuart Fischoff discusses the film Boys and Men Healing, about the effects of sexual abuse.  The makers cannot get reviews or anyone to show it as we all like to stick our heads in the sand.
  • Patsy McGarry reports on a ‘one-day boycott of Sunday Mass next month in protest at the Catholic Church’s treatment of women and its response to abuse scandals.’
  • Fouad Hady reports from Iraq on the rise in births of disabled children, and the high incidence of children with cancer. (H/T Uruknet)
  • Susie Orbach writes an comment piece and Shahesta Shaitly interviews 7 activists in ‘The new feminists: still fighting’.

And now for a bit of beauty, Alice Smith’s Woodstock
