Mariam Siddiqui Returned To Her Family?
Following the March 2010 statement by Hamid Karzai, “the children of Aafia Siddiqui will be sent home soon“, it is reported today that Mariam Siddiqui, daughter of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, has been returned to her family seven years after her disappearance in March 2003.
KARACHI: Unknown men on Sunday brought a 12-year-old girl at the residence of Dr. Aafia’s Siddiqi’s sister Dr. Fauzia Siddiqi in Karachi. They claimed that the girl was the missing daughter of Dr. Aafia Siddiqi, who was currently in a US prison. Meanwhile, a large number media persons after receiving the reports, gathered outside the residence of Dr. Fauzia. According to eyewitnesses, the girl has been taken inside the house along with the people, who brought her. On the other hand, NADRA officials got the fingerprints of the girl so that her relationship with Dr. Aafia could be verified. Dr. Fauzia said that she was not aware who this girl was because she was not being allowed to speak to anyone.
It’s long been alleged and reported that in March 2003 Pakistai’s ISI, at the behest of the CIA, kidnapped Mariam aged 3 with her mother and brother Ahmed, then aged 7 who both strangely turned up in Ghazni, Afghanistan in July 2008 where they were arrested by Afghan police. Mariam’s brother Suleman aged 6 months also disappeared at this time and nothing has ever been heard of him since.
It is also widely believed that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was prisoner 650 aka the Grey Lady held at Bagram during the time of Siddiqui’s disappearance. She is now awating sentence in America following a guilty verdict at her 2010 trial for shooting at American soldiers whilst in Afghan custody in 2008. The 9 day trial was covered daily on Cageprisoners by Petra Bartosiewicz which can now be found here. It makes strange reading. Bartosiewicz has previously written about Siddiqui for Harpers and Pramilla Srivastava has tried to summarise what is actually known and not known about Siddiqui here. More information can be found via Justice for Aafia Coalition.
Update: It has been reported that this girl is not Mariam Siddiqui.
