Joan Baez

December 9, 2009

If you missed Joan Baez on Imagine tonight it is well worth catching on the BBC iPlayer where it will be available until 15th December. More about Baez can be found at her website and Wiki.

From the YouTube blurb:

“With God on Our Side” is a song by Bob Dylan, released as the third track on his 1964 album The Times They Are A-Changin’. Dylan first performed the song during his debut appearance at The Town Hall in New York City on April 12, 1963. Dylan is known to sing the song only rarely in concert.

The lyrics generally address the notion of humans that God or some other higher power(s) invariably sides with them and opposes those with whom they disagree, and thus they don’t question the morality of wars fought and atrocities committed by their country. Dylan mentions various wars and events from United States and world history, including the slaughter of Native Americans in the nineteenth century, the Spanish-American War, the American Civil War, World Wars I and II, the Holocaust, the Cold War, and the betrayal of Jesus Christ by Judas Iscariot.

Perhaps Barack Obama could have a little listen to this song and re-read Baez’s beautiful endorsement of him as the Democratic presidential candidate in 2008:

Editor – I have attempted throughout my life to give a voice to the voiceless, hope to the hopeless, encouragement to the discouraged, and options to the cynical and complacent. From Northern Ireland to Sarajevo to Latin America, I have sung and marched, engaged in civil disobedience, visited war zones, and broken bread with those who had little bread to break.

Through all those years, I chose not to engage in party politics. Though I was asked many times to endorse candidates at every level, I was never comfortable doing so. At this time, however, changing that posture feels like the responsible thing to do. If anyone can navigate the contaminated waters of Washington, lift up the poor, and appeal to the rich to share their wealth, it is Sen. Barack Obama. If anyone can bring light to the darkened corners of this nation and restore our positive influence in world affairs, it is Barack Obama. If anyone can begin the process of healing and bring unity to a country that has been divided for too long, it is Barack Obama. It is time to begin a new journey.

There’s a coincidence. There is a Dylan tribute band called With Bob On Our Side.

It started in Crewe Cheshire as a band put together for an integrated project for an arts degree, me being the original bass player.

Your post has brought back memories.

Ms. Joan Baez has a basic sense of humanity that i thank God she has not lost over the years;so many things many of us must have brought to our attention, whether we like and absorb them or not, she seemed to know at such a youthful age (like, killing is wasteful, stupid as well as immoral and illegal..).we are all one, and it makes no sense to kill part of who we are…better to learn from the negative aspects rather than destroy them…for if we destroy, who are we? the sweet, kind faces we put on as an aspects of ourselves? or the darkness we sometimes imbrace? i do not claim to have any answers…i have been in too many dark holes of my own and as an artist, i cannot help also being an observer of life, people. i do believe that when you harm a human being, you harm us all regardless of what your intent was…how can we be connected (as we all are, no matter what you think or perceive as being our differences…atoms, molecules…electricity;dismiss it all if you must to be comfortable…but everything touches everything by touching everything elso and we are electricity;electricity!!
only our bodies can perish…beyond that, we know next to nothing, which is as it should be, must be for us to function here on this plane or realm (to those who have tuned out, “bye and i pray you find your path…i still have not;i am just sharing with anyone who may have an intrest);i do not know why we are here anymore than you do;i am a seeker also and i frequently lose my way…beware of people who tell you that they have the “answers” and be very careful to whom you tell your truths, please. thanks for listening, judy
